Empowerment is another valuable concept in the cancer industry. The goal of the complimentary health care providers is to empower the patient.
We help people increase their personal odds of beating cancer – by telling them things about cancer NO ONE ELSE tells them. Every week the e mails and letters we receive tell us just how much we help, how we EMPOWER, and allow people to TAKE BACK CONTROL of their own lives by making more informed personal choices.

This idea of control is a bit of an illusion, a patient is plunged into this unknowable threatening situation. They are afraid, the world has become a darker place. It would be nice to gain some control some power over this situation. However the cancer, the reason for the situation is not controllable. A patient can control his diet but this won’t really bring an end to the uncertainty.
My dad is not being empowered. The retired GP in Tamworth suggested a treatment. I can’t really understand what this is; my dad was to drink something then go under a sun bed. The sun bed would activate the chemical. To be honest I got this information from somebody who is ill and confused; it isn’t entirely clear and he can’t remember the name. Whatever it is costs £11,000 a shot.
My dad asked Patricia, Patricia said no.
I don’t disagree with the advice but it isn’t an empowerment situation, he has simply handed over the power of agency to someone who he trusts.
Which rather relies on her being trustworthy, open and honest.
Isn’t fortunate that she is a member of a professional body taking a supervisory role on questions of ethics.
I’m sure Patricia could think of an “alternative” (in both senses of the word) treatment that doesn’t involve giving him eleven grand. Maybe one that involved giving her eleven grand?
Allow me to alter that:
We help people increase their personal odds of beating cancer – by telling them things about cancer NO ONE ELSE tells them. Because they are half truths, or wrong, or we have misinterpreted a study on rats and assumed it applies to humans. Every week the e mails and letters we receive tell us just how much they think we have helped, how we make them feel EMPOWERED, and allow people feel they are doing something, because they are desperate and clinging to any straw they can, so they want to TAKE BACK CONTROL of their own lives by making some VERY MIS informed personal choices.
Funny.
Well not funny…
Ooh I missed a bit
We DON’T help people increase their personal odds of beating cancer – by telling them misinformation about cancer NO ONE ELSE tells them, because they are half truths, or wrong, or we have misinterpreted a study on rats and assumed it applies to humans. Every week the e mails and letters we receive tell us just how much they think we have helped, how we make them feel EMPOWERED, and allow people feel they are doing something, because they are desperate and clinging to any straw they can, so they delude them themselves that they are able to TAKE BACK CONTROL of their own lives by when all they are doing is making some VERY MIS informed personal choices.
Anyway do we have this GPs name? I believe a call to the GMC may be in order?
